The production of paper is a very complex and dynamic process. Paper machines must be adjusted
to the exact requirements of the paper type. Whether the paper machines run fast or slow,
whether they are wide or narrow: the machine operators are always in agreement – the
manufacturing processshould be as efficient and profitable as possible.

In the paper machine alone the paper passes a web length of hundreds of meters. If parallelism of the rollers is not given, paper can break and tensions due to the uneven web may accumulate in the paper and manifest in the subsequent production steps: at the roll cutting machine, as a result of web breaks in the printing machine or through compromised print quality.

The parallelism of rollers, rolls and cylinders in a paper machine is therefore crucial for the product quality and process assurance. With the unique PARALIGN roll alignment system, several rollers can be aligned with each other to within a few microns in a fraction of the time otherwise needed. Roller measurement with PARALIGN has become a standard process in the wet section of a paper machine and also in the enclosed dryer section.

Rollers in the press section, on the calender or in the coating machine are often driven by means of cardan shafts. After servicing or replacing a motor in the press, the alignment of the motor and roller shaft must be checked. Although cardan shafts by definition compensate the parallel offset, the angular misalignment must be within the manufacturer’s tolerance, to prevent premature wear of the universal joints. Unplanned downtime costs valuable production time, in addition to the substantial costs for the loss of the cardan shaft.

Laser-based measurement systems can prevent this. In addition to the alignment of cardan shafts, our systems are also used to measure and optimize the geometry of machines and components, for example:

  • Rotational axis alignment
  • Flatness
  • Straightness.

Condition monitoring of the roller bearings is the most critical factor in all paper and pulp production processes. Depending on the operating condition and level of diagnostic, diverse evaluation methods are used, from simple analysis of overall values to advanced envelope spectrum analysis.

In the paper machine, usually all measurement locations, but especially the inaccessible ones, such as in the hot dryer section, are monitored with a networked, multi-channel online system. All production-critical secondary components, such as pulp preparation pumps, vacuum pumps and fans, likewise are equipped with online condition monitoring systems. Mobile data collection with portable, high-performance instruments is suitable for all other measurement locations on lower-level components.
