Solving vibration issues on boiler feed water pump

KPS, South Korea

The Challenge

KPS specializes in reliable high-quality maintenance services of hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear plants.
In one of the serviced plants, a Boiler Feed Pump (BFP) was showing high vibration level despite regular diagnosis. KPS decided to measure the relative positional changes of the pump in operation to help identify the potential underlying issue.

The Solution

Monitoring positional changes is important especially when the machine runs under high temperatures and varying loads. Temperature variations (thermal growth) and pipe strain that typically occur during the run-up and coast-down phases are key factors of machine movements.

Using the PERMALIGN monitoring system and associated PC software, KPS monitored the movements from hot to semi-cold and during the coast-down phase.
