Gearboxes are present in virtually all areas of drive technology. The most common type of
mechanical gearbox is the gear. Typical designs are:

  • Spur gears

  • Bevel gears
  • Planetary gears.

Acting as the link between the driving and driven machine, gearboxes have to be designed for
high reliability. Extreme, constantly changing loads during operation affect the service life of
gearbox components. The high procurement costs and the expense involved in replacing a
gearbox unit necessitate specific monitoring measures:

  • Monitoring of the gear mesh
  • Monitoring of the roller bearings
  • Monitoring of the wear particles in the lubricating oil
  • Monitoring of the alignment condition.
