Advent calendar for good deeds of the Süddeutsche Zeitung
When the newspaper ‘Süddeutsche Zeitung’ first appealed to its readers at the turn of the year 1948/49 to help the homeless and starving, as well as refugees, a sum of 1,281 German Marks was raised.
The relief action got its name on December 1, 1950, when Bernhard Pollack, editor-in-chief of the local newsroom, wrote: “Starting today, we will report daily on a particularly distressing situation within the city walls of Munich. Perhaps the result will be an advent calendar with windows illuminated by good deeds.”
The 62nd relief action of the “Advent calendar for good deeds of the Süddeutsche Zeitung” has raised nearly five million euros since last autumn. The money directly benefits people and families in need as well as social projects throughout the entire Munich region.
