Why roll alignment?

Rolls that are well aligned – i.e. parallel to each other – improve product quality and increase productivity through higher machine availability and production output.

Parallelism of rolls is even more important when machines are running at high speeds and/or when rolls are in close proximity.


PARALIGN is the fastest roll measurement method in the market.

With a quick setup procedure and fast measuring process, entire machines can be measured during short maintenance outages. PARALIGN results are instantaneously displayed which allows necessary corrections to be made quickly and adjusted rolls to be re-measured immediately.

PARALIGN can even measure rolls in enclosed sections or across multiple levels of a machine because, unlike optical measurement systems, it does not require any line of sight. In addition, no baseline is needed for the measurement since the offset is defined in relation to a reference roll.

How does it work?

PARALIGN consists of three ring laser gyroscopes, enabling it to take measurements in three-dimensional space. (Roll, Pitch, and Yaw). No line of sight is required. This helps us achieve very reproducible results.

To perform a measurement, the PARALIGN device is placed on the roll and swept a minimum of 20 degrees about the roll’s circumference. During 30-second measuring window, the points are evaluated for acceptable values to ensure accurate results. The measurement results are instantly transmitted wirelessly to a laptop.

Must rolls be parallel?

Yes. Rolls should be parallel to ensure that the product being created is uniform and of good quality.

Parallelism of rolls is even more important when machines are running at very high speeds and when the rolls are very close to each other.

It is critical to ensure roll parallelism to reduce uneven bearing stresses, tracking, web breaks, uneven coating, wrinkling, delamination, warping, roller surface wear, tension irregularities, etc.

Proper roller alignment minimizes waste, downtime and maintenance costs.

Where on the roll can PARALIGN take a measurement?

The PARALIGN can be positioned anywhere along the circumference of the roll so as long as there is 20 degrees of clearance to complete a proper measurement using the SWEEP method. This flexibility allows for rolls to be measured on the top, bottom, or sides depending on which is most accessible.

What is the smallest roll that can be measured?

The smallest roll can be 43cm (17 inches) in length and 8mm (0.315 inches) in diameter.

When can we see the report for the measured machine?

The graphical readout is displayed in the corresponding PARALIGN software as soon as each roll is measured. A full report with initial and final alignment results is given to the customer upon completion of the service.

Does accuracy depend on the location of the roll?

The PARALIGN does not decrease in accuracy based on location, elevation, or proximity.

Is PARALIGN for sale or rent?

We offer the PARALIGN Service for roll alignment as a service to our clients. PRUFTECHNIK does not sell PARALIGN at this time.

Do you need optics to set-up your measurements?

The PARALIGN system does not require a visual line of sight to gather alignment data. The PARALIGN system becomes an essential tool when measuring enclosed oven rolls, tower rolls, or rolls located across multiple floors/levels. However, the software has the ability to incorporate optical data from a baseline if required.

What is inertial technology?

Inside the PARALIGN measurement system are three highly precise ring-laser gyroscopes. Such gyroscopes keep their rotation axis unchanged due to mass inertia, even if their base is shifted. This way, the angle of inclination along the rotation axis can be determined.

The three gyroscopes in the PARALIGN system are arranged along three dimensions in space (x, y and z). The three angles – roll, pitch and yaw – that are determined by the system give its exact position in space. This means that PARALIGN can identify its relative position in space at any time.

The same technology is commonly used in aerospace navigation systems.
